Planet X Spitfire

Hi. Welcome to my first ever post. Here I will be talking about my latest ride on my new Planet X Spitfire.

My Spitfire setup

First a bit of background information on the frame and forks. Jamie Burrow, former Junior Road World Champion and designer for Planet X drew up the blue prints for the Spitfire and with his experience and knowledge designed a very fast and agile racing bike. After these designs had been given the all clear Sarto, the bike manufacturing company based in Italy designing and building high quality custom fit frames for racing, got to work building 12 of these new frames, one of which Jamie Burrow rode to victory in the Maratona dles Dolomites. This proved that this frame had lots of potential and so a lot of work was been done to further develop and finish up the frame for retail.
My latest ride on the Spitfire was a steady 50 mile morning ride around Cheshire as I had to be in school later on for a Duke of Edinburgh route planing afternoon. My Dad and I set off from outside my school, King's Macclesfield, at about 9:45 when the sky was a miserable grey with rain clouds and the roads, lathered with constant flow of cold water from the sky. This meant we weren't in the most optimistic of moods at that moment however I soon cheered up after experiencing the full grip of the Vittoria Open Corsa CX ISO grip compound road tyre fitted to the bike's rims. Now I was overtaking my Dad on wet and slippery descents due to the added grip which made up for my lack of size and weight.

It was a cold and wet day in Cheshire

Soon, however, the scene brightened up as the sun broke through the clouds and warmth was restored to the vast planes of Cheshire. There was no need for me to test out how fast the bike could go as every pedal stroke seemed to take me further than usual with relatively smaller effort put through the cranks. As time passed by I was not surprised to find that I was really comfortable on the bike and felt like I could have ridden on for hours possibly due to the Planet X Team Issue saddle that had been installed.
Overall I am highly impressed with my new road bike and look forward to a year filled with hard training rides and explosive races upon it. Much thanks to Dave Loughran, Frank Campbell and Jamie Burrow at Planet X.

  1. I have a Spitfire too and it's a lovely ride. Compared to my Genesis Equalibrium 10 2010 model it's lighter and every bit as comfortable to ride as my steelie 725 cromoly. I opted for continental gp400 tyres with Ultrega 6800 drive train and have replaced the seat with Selle Italia gel flow

  2. Hello, do you have a spitfire titanium? How does it ride compared to a carbon fiber bike ? Is it as stiff , as reactive?
Thanks a lot for your aswers.

    1. Hi,

I'm afraid I have the Planet X Spitfire Carbon Frame so I'm unable to give much insight into the Titanium Spitfire! What I can say is the Carbon frame is incredibly stiff and responsive which is fantastic for delivering power efficiently from the pedals to the tarmac! I'm assuming the Titanium Spitfire has similar geometry to the Carbon version in which case I would suggest that the Spitfire frame as a whole provides a comfortable yet responsive and reactive riding experience! As always the guys at Planet X provide brilliant customer service and therefore I would suggest that any of their current road frames would be a strong investment.

      Hope that helps!

      Gregg
