National Talent Camp - Day 3

Day 3 of the camp greeted us with a lie in, well 06:45 was better than 05:45! Breakfast at the Premier Inn was brilliant with many cyclists mixing with the tennis folk, eating lots and generally having a pleasant morning. We left the hotel at 07:15 and after a quick tour of the campus whilst dropping people off at their 'classroom' locations, arrived at the netball centre, the base of Group 2. This morning was a bit slower with various activities used to wake us all up and prepare us for some more hard thinking.
The topic up for discussion was emotional intelligence and therefore the well known model of Professor Steve Peters' 'Chimp Paradox'. After watching a short clip of a coach handling a team discussion pretty badly we discussed how we could control our minds and help our athletes when faced with hardship be that during a sporting event or in our own personal lives.
Lunch soon crept upon us and even though we were not hungry after breakfast it was important to prepare for the long afternoon ahead of us. To begin with we made our way across the campus to a large and very comfortable lecture room where we were presented with an analysis of social media in sport and how we can use it to promote ourselves to help us in achieving our goals. This was incredibly useful not only as a lesson in how to promote ourselves well but also highly informative on why it is so important to create a 'Brand Me' and represent it correctly.
Following this we attended a follow up session on yesterday's 'Honesty and Ethics' workshop. We were joined by England Hockey Men's Head Coach Bobby Crutchley and a couple more highly regarded sports people who informed of times when they had to question there own ethics such as when taking athletes into potentially dangerous surrounding to compete and also in allowing athletes to compete in an environment where injury is common or alternatively exploit another athlete's injury. Here we were introduced to three recent sport scandals such as the Bloodgate scandal. This challenged are beliefs as each of us conferred with our neighbour on topics such as who was in the wrong and which actions should be taken in response to such events.
Finally we made our way to dinner and then to our penultimate NGB session. During this hour we used our mobile devices to search athletes we view as socially representing themselves well and created a 'post-it note' board of the features we thought were used to create a strong social representation and therefore self-image. Following this we used an exercise including a pair of 'string handcuffs'. The idea was to intertwine them between two people to begin with and then to find a away of escaping the loop. As many struggled, the coaches were shown how to escape and then asked to take the information back to their groups. This had to be repeated and as a result highlighted the need to pay close attention when analysing performance which could be translated to our own sports.
After another long day the hotel bed was very welcoming, especially since tomorrow would bring another brutal circuit training session with it!
